Greater Terre Haute Pickleball Association

Great New Start to each New Year

No matter how long you've been playing pickleball, there is no reason NOT to take part in a tournament. "Really?" you ask or exclaim. I tell you from personal experience. I had only been playing pickleball for TWO WEEKS before I was in my first tournament!!! Admittedly, I wasn't good enough to truly compete but I sure had a blast!

Our annual Cheers to the New Year tournament is in its third year. We play at the ISU (Indiana State University) Arena. It is a huge, indoor recreational center that provides us with ample space to hold our event. The floor has a rubber surface your feet and knees will really appreciate. Your eyes will need to do a little adjusting to the lines since this college facility has been home to a number of sports over the years. To make it a little easier, we tape off the pickleball courts prior to our tournament. All in all, it will be worth your while. Come join us for this fantastic competition.

This is a USAPA-sanctioned, skill-level event. We have high hopes to "see you at the courts!"

2014 Cheers to the New Year Tournament

Our second annual Cheers to the New Year tournament boasted the highest number of participants of any Terre Haute tournament to-date. We had nearly 150 players registered to compete!

The winter weather was less than cooperative and far-reaching. Saturday was fine, but a big snow storm headed into town and affected not only local gaming on Sunday but also travel plans for players who came from far and wide. Many out-of-town participants and spectators had to scoot home early to try to get ahead of the snow. Some opted to stay and ended up needing to add an extra day or two to their travel plans toward home as they got more than a bit snowed in by the time the last flake settled to the ground!

Good times were had by all and winning results of each category were posted to the USAPA website after the tournament came to a close. (Use the BACK button on your browser after checking out the final results.)  2014 Cheers To The New Year Indoor Skill Level Tournament . Congratulations to all who placed. Unlike our September tournament, Terre Haute players did NOT dominate the winnings. We had some excellent games and tough competitors that battled it out to the end...so fun to watch and probably even more fun to PLAY!

A special shout out to all local GTHPA members and others as well who graciously volunteered in so many ways. We had people helping with set-up and tear-down, check in, score keeping, and at the food court. We also had quite a number of people who bought or made food for the event. Naming names is never a good idea. Invariably, someone gets left out. A simple thank you will have to suffice and though it seems small, it's not. The gratitude extended is deep and sincere. You know who you are and we do too! Thank you all so much for your help. We couldn't put together an event such as this without our great volunteers.                       article by: Marcia Ogle
